DAP violates its promise of reforms: Tiong

KUCHING: Sarawak Pakatan Harapan (PH) will continue to support the unilateral appointments of politicians to national commissions to betray DAP’s position as the government’s running dog.

Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the DAP had failed to uphold PH to its election promises for non-political top-level appointments by backing former PKR politician Latheefa Koya’s appointment to the MACC’s top post.

“Without going through the Cabinet, this has violated PH’s previous promise that “the Prime Minister (PM) is especially committed to institutional reforms,” Tiong pointed out in a statement on Saturday.

“The appointment of the former executive director for Lawyers for Liberty had come under intense backlash from politicians and civil society groups as it bypassed parliamentarian review since it w announced on June 4,” he added.

“Politicians on both sides of the aisle had slammed the unilateral move by the Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as under-mining the parliamentary select committee (PAC) which vets candidates for top positions in national commissions and the judiciary,” he pointed out.

Tiong also mentioned that the appointment by the PM was also made without consulting the Federal Cabinet.

“The legality of Latheefa’s appointment aside, the DAP had made the promise with Dr Mahathir’s Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) to end appointments of politicians to national commissions as a reform for institutional independence,” he said.

He further mentioned that DAP’s Wong King Wei should not shamelessly support any single decision by the PM.

“What happened to returning power to the people so that leaders can stand up to criticisms?” he asked.

He also said that Wong’s party would stand up to unilateral moves by their PH colleagues in order to honour the wishes of their supporters.

“Before election, it is easy to brag about what you will do when in power. What’s the result now? Do you think the Chinese community is happy with your actions?” he asked.

Tiong also said that Wong should feel humiliated about forgetting his ancestors’ lessons on ethics.-SV
